Good biosecurity in land-based farming is about preventive measures and strategies to protect both the fish and the environment against disease outbreaks and other threats that can affect fish health and the environment.

Biosecurity includes all measures needed to prevent disease outbreaks and to limit any damage that may occur and together contribute to reducing the risk of disease outbreaks and creating a healthy and sustainable fish production that takes care of both the fish, the people and the environment.

Examples of measures that contribute to good biosecurity in farming:

  • Regular cleaning and disinfection of the plant and equipment to remove possible sources of infection.
  • Control and follow-up of the fish population, using the adaptation of feeding, environmental parameters and health control to avoid outbreaks of disease and stress.
  • Isolation and quarantine of new fish and non-contact with other fish that may be carriers of infection. Here, it is important to have good practice for handling fish and equipment to avoid the transmission of possible disease inside the facility
  • Qualified training of employees on cleaning and microbiological challenges.
  • Thoughtful design of facilities, which makes cleaning and disinfection of the departments more efficient

Contagion of various diseases and viruses such as e.g. IPN, Yersinosis, etc. is a risk in farming, which can lead to large losses. Hygienic design has an important role in reducing possible outbreaks of infection. With the help of small changes, new and existing facilities can be improved, and production secured.

Over a long period of time, Aquatiq has acquired expertise in hygienic design, microbiology and training. Therefore, we can assist you who invest in new facilities, or deliver this.

Stricter requirements for the industry:

The Aquaculture Operations Regulations require segregation in terms of infection between the generations in a farming facility. Together with our expertise in cleaning and hygiene solutions, we can create facilities that meet these requirements.

Cleaning & Disinfection

In order to simplify and streamline an already hectic everyday life for the breeder, Aquatiq can assist and carry out the cleaning and disinfection of farming facilities, as well as coordinating major resets of facilities. We have assisted many breeders and facilities with, among other things:

  • Cleaning in between generational cycles
  • Deep cleaning
  • Resetting facilities

Biosecurity plans

Aquatiq has fish health biologists and employees with long experience at land-based aquaculture facilities and experience in preparing biosecurity plans.

Hygienic Design

Good Hygienic Design provides better control over water quality and less need for manual cleaning and maintenance.
Hygienic Design results in increased efficiency and financial profitability.

Aquatiq is a member of EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group) and works to promote hygienic design and technology in existing and new land-based facilities.

Course & Training

Good and qualified training of employees is a basic requirement for maintaining good biosecurity.

  • Fish welfare course with a focus on biosecurity.

Your advisor:

We can assist with optimizing facilities that are built with a focus on hygienic design and microbiological control. Normally, this will involve points such as; choice of materials and surfaces, placement of equipment and devices, production flow, etc.

If you have been diagnosed with an illness in an existing facility, we can assist you in the process to reset the facility. Our goals in such situations are to:

  • Detect/locate the problem quickly.
  • Eliminate the problem, if RAS – reset as most often the option.
  • Ensure continuous safe production.

Such cases are not a routine for breeders, and for that reason few have experience in dealing with such a situation. Therefore, we will assist to ensure an optimal zero setting, and training of employees to ensure production in addition to preventing new cases.

Stein has specialist expertise in hygienic design, hygiene for technical department and cleaning, including technical processes and cleaning systems. Practical experience from various food industries, and many years as a traveling consultant, both Norwegian and international markets.

Stein leads and participates in projects where there is a need for problem solving related to contamination with Listeria or another unwanted microflora.

Stein is a motivator, and always has a central position in projects, where there is a need to change and develop the company’s management team and corporate culture.

Eeli Raatevaara

Eeli is project manager RAS, with expertise in RAS chemistry, water treatment, fish welfare and daily breeding. He is a trained professional operator in aquaculture, with experience from fish farming.

Eeli has worked with farming on fish farms and hatcheries. Both flow-through facilities and RAS. Has participated in the development and start-up of RAS facilities, and prepared good procedures and routines. He also has knowledge of water chemistry and water treatment, with a focus on salmon and marine species in land-based facilities.

Preben Mørner-Bartnes

Preben is project manager RAS, with experience in fish welfare, breeding, water treatment, and daily procedures from fish farms. He has an academic background in fisheries and work experience in aquaculture from fish farms and hatcheries.

Preben has a degree in Marine Science and Fisheries Science from Australia with experience in flow-through facilities in Norway and RAS facilities in Australia. His main knowledge is of marine species, mainly fish and shellfish.
